The first Richmond Zine Fest, was Saturday, April 28th, 2007, at the Firehouse Theatre and The Camel community space on the 1600 block of Broad Street in midtown Richmond, VA. It was the first zine fest in the city in 13 years. The organizers of the 2007 Richmond Zine Fest had a goal to create a network among current zine writers and folks who own distros in Richmond and the surrounding region. The organizers also wanted to raise awareness about and encourage the creation of zines, along with promoting independent press, and other D.I.Y. projects in the Richmond area. Forty-five zine writers and distros tabled at the 2007 zine fest, most of whom were from Richmond and the surrounding areas, but others came a longer way, from New York and the West Coast. Over 250 people attended the 2007 Richmond Zine Fest, which featured readings by China Martens, Ariel Gore, and Annie Downey, as well as a host of workshops and discussions. Books on Wheels also was parked out in front of the Firehouse Theater to bring bike repair and free books to the community. The 2007 Richmond Zine Fest culminated in a show at The Camel featuring Now Sleepyhead, Snorklewacker, and Erin Tobey.

Energized by the success of the 2007 Richmond Zine Fest, the organizers got to work quickly for 2008, holding multiple fundraisers and benefit shows and keeping our original goals intact. Due to feedback from visitors and tablers, the Richmond Zine Fest moved to one location at the Gay Community Center, and was held October 11th, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This location allowed everyone to be in the same room and it had plenty of space for workshops and socializing. Another bonus to this location was there was (vegan) food and coffee on the premises. Again, there were over 40 zine makers and distros tabling and workshops ranged from harm reduction to bike repair to activism about the prison/(in)justice system. More than 250 people visited the 2008 Zine Fest. Luckily the Books on Wheels folks were available again, so the ubiquitous Books on Wheels bus was dutifully parked out front, bringing bike repair and free books to the masses.

Due to the success of the first two years, the Richmond Zine Fest organizing group has grown and we are all furiously planning the next event. Wanting to keep the zine fest within easy biking, bus, and walking distance from downtown Richmond, the organizers have decided to partner with Gallery 5 at 200 West Marshall Street, in downtown Richmond, VA. This year's zine fest will be a weekend-long event, starting with a First Friday gallery show that will feature a zine show as well as a few tablers, readings, and possibly live music. This First Friday event will run from 7-11 p.m. Friday, November 6th. The next day, the Richmond Zine Fest will be at Gallery 5 from 11 a.m - 5 p.m. where zine makers and distros from around the region (and further) will be tabling and participating in workshops.
